How to use double-sided modules?

- Sep 14, 2022-

Bifacial modules, as the name suggests, are modules that can generate electricity from both the front and the back. When sunlight hits the bifacial module, part of the light is reflected by the surrounding environment to the back of the bifacial module, and this part of the light can be absorbed by the cell, thereby contributing to the photocurrent and efficiency of the cell.

1. Application scenarios of double-sided modules

Due to the double-sided power generation characteristics of double-sided modules, the front side absorbs direct sunlight, and the back side receives ground reflected light and scattered light in the air. Both the front side and the back side can generate electricity, so the installation direction can be arbitrarily oriented, and the installation inclination can also be arbitrarily set. Therefore, the double-sided modules are suitable for installation in various scenarios, such as agricultural and photovoltaic complementary power stations, ground power stations, water surface power stations, roof power stations, road sound insulation walls, carports, BIPV and so on.

2. Factors affecting the power generation of bifacial modules

Compared with conventional modules, bifacial modules are affected by many other factors.

The application of double-sided module system needs to pay attention to the power generation factors such as the back power of the module, the installation height, the scene reflectivity, the bracket structure, and the installation method of the module.

When installing a double-sided battery, the sandalwood bar must be located at the edge of the module to avoid the sandalwood bar blocking the back of the module, and at the same time, it is necessary to reduce the blocking of the back of the module by other components (such as inverters).

3. The influence of the scene environment on the double-sided module system

Due to the different reflectivity in different installation environments, the power generation gain on the back of the bifacial module varies from 10 to 30%.

The higher the reflectivity of the scene, the higher the irradiance received by the back of the module, and the higher the power generation gain of the corresponding bifacial module system.

4. The influence of different heights, angles and orientations on double-sided modules

The installation inclination, ground clearance, and orientation of the bifacial modules will also affect the power generation of the module system.

In a distributed rooftop power station, when the load requirements are met, the double-sided module can raise the height of the module from the ground, fully absorb the scattered light and reflected light from the back, and obtain more power generation and revenue.

5. Application of double-sided modules in agricultural and photovoltaic power stations

In the agricultural-photovoltaic complementary power station, the white greenhouse film can reflect sunlight to the back of the module, and the power generation gain can be increased to more than 35% compared with conventional modules.

6. System application of bifacial modules in surface power plants

Photovoltaic power stations built on fish ponds and reservoirs use the water surface to reflect sunlight to the back of the bifacial module, which can increase the power generation of the bifacial module system. Improve the power generation efficiency of components.

With the continuous development of photovoltaic module technology, bifacial modules have become an effective solution to reduce the kWh cost of power plants and improve the investment yield of photovoltaic power plant projects due to their excellent bifacial power generation performance.
